Introduction

UK Fisheries Authorities can license up to 9 UK-registered vessels with a UK domestic fishing vessel licence to target Albacore tuna in 2025. There is 663t of quota available to UK vessels (of which up to 280t can be taken from EU waters). The 663t includes an amount set aside for by-catch by the UK fleet.

A tonnage limit will be set in issued licences and this amount will depend on the number of applications received and licences issued. This limit may be subject to review and variation, as required.

MMO are keen to ensure that licences are issued in a fair manner, recognising the significant investment that certain vessel owners will have made in researching the Northern Albacore fishery and equipping their vessels to pursue it.  Applicants should therefore provide evidence of their preparation and ability to participate in the fishery.

You will be asked some questions about you, the vessel you are applying on behalf of, details of your intended fishing plan, as well as any previous experience you may have of the fishery and what benefits your fishing plan will bring.

This can be found on the vessel's certificate of registry. It is important that you make sure this is correct, it will be shown on your licence.
